Product Information
Overlanders and Inlanders. Stories of the development of Australia's 'Top Half' and its colouful characters 1850s to 1950s. Milton F Owen, author.
The opening of northern parts of Australia is very much connected with the efforts of Nat Buchanan, John Costello and Patsy Durack, all proponents for a cattle industry. Close and enduring friendships with aboriginal people proved to be indispensable in helping white settlers adapt to the harsh environment. The tragedy of the displacement of aborigines is an entrenched part of Australian history.
The Australian Inland Mission followed these cattlemen, and provided practical and spiritual support. Names of Outback padres like Kingsley Partridge, Harry Griffiths and Flynn of the Inland are etched into Outback history.
The advent of the Overland Telegraph Line is chronicled in the book, showing how it contributed to northern development.
This a very readable book, authored by a person who personally knew the families of many of the characters portrayed.
